World War II was a very destructive conflict, especially for Europe. German forces were overrunning and occupying much of the continent, with destruction following wherever they went.

The Allied plan to retake Europe hinged on establishing a beachhead on the Normandy coast, which required massive manpower and exquisite timing. The first phase was codenamed Operation Overlord.

June 6, 1944, was the launch date for Operation Overlord, or D-Day, which marked a major turning point in the war. Although it was successful, thousands of lives were lost.

Operation Overlord was a much bigger undertaking than most people realize. It required cunning, deception, and amazing logistical organization.
